Different courses and programs such as AutoCAD, MATLAB, and Solid Works, for example, have different software requirements and, depending on the type of project you are working on.

A significant amount of rendering and processing power. This comes from the laptop’s core hardware family, so I’m talking CPU, RAM, and SSD storage, but ideally, it also comes from a dedicated GPU.

Buying a laptop with a dedicated GPU is a huge benefit as many engineering software programs can outsource a lot of rendering and processing, which speeds up rendering and production times tremendously.

After all, the last thing a student wants is to wait hours between classes with the professor because the system is running out of power.

The basic level specs engineering students should consider are an Intel Core i5 processor (or AMD equivalent) with 16GB of RAM and a 512GB SSD.

It should then ideally be paired with a dedicated GPU from Intel, AMD, or Nvidia. However, if I were to recommend the specs of an engineering student laptop.

I would boost the processor up to an Intel Core i7. More RAM you have, the better (32GB or 64GB is ideal).

In terms of graphics cards, Intel GPUs should be considered entry-level, ideally, a system with a 20 or 30 series Nvidia RTX card should be on the card.

If you need the best laptop for your engineering software and if you’re working on a professional level, I think you need a computer that can move a lot between home and office or between office and site.

Processor-based graphics cards are too slow for serious CAD applications. Must be current or previous generation.

Enough RAM

In general, laptops for engineering software in 2021 must have the following specifications to last for a full engineering degree or a three-year depreciation period for business users, whether engineering students or businesses.

Processor. Intel i7-10th generation processor or AMD Ryzen 7 or 9th or 4th generation CPU

Graphic card. NVIDIA GeForce GTX1660 or higher (old, low performance), NVIDIA GeForce RTX2060 or higher (new, high performance), or AMD Radeon RX 5600M (new, high performance)

RAM. Minimum 16GB RAM, 32GB is better. My computer is using 25-30GB (of 64GB) for reference.

SSD. PCIe NVMe SSD storage is about 6-8 times faster than SATA SSD.

Port. USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-C Port: External Monitor, Dock, Ethernet, Rechargeable – Versatile!

Screen. Full HD (1920×1080) display, 300 NITS minimum brightness for outdoor use.

Avoid NVIDIA Quadro P520/P620 models. It has less than 1/3 of the GPU pipeline, 1/3 of the similarly priced GTX1660 Max-Q RAM, and about 1/3 of the benchmark performance. The Quadro lineup of mid-range laptops offers little value for money.

Even if some engineering applications lead you to think there are better graphics cards out there. Performance is still good with game cards running Studio drivers.

If you feel you need a Quadro card or have been advised to buy one, stick with the Quadro RTX 3000 as it offers decent performance.

The NVIDIA Quadro T2000 model is slightly slower than the GTX1660, which is about 20% slower than the GeForce RTX2060, so it may be suitable for modern engineering applications as well.
